Start with Three Different Dimension Systems

Do not put one unlabeled set of numbers on the drawing. Identify:

  1. Product maximum L × W × H: the largest envelope of the packed part in its intended loading orientation.
  2. Clear cell L × W × H: the usable opening after the divider grid is assembled.
  3. Overall divider/grid L × W × H: the outside dimensions of the complete insert.

If the grid sits inside a box, tote or rack, also provide that container’s internal dimensions. External dimensions do not show the usable space available to the divider.

“Twenty-four cells” is not a complete layout. It could mean 4 × 6, 3 × 8 or another arrangement with a different footprint.

Provide rows × columns, total cell count and the direction of the rows relative to the outer container. State whether the grid is fixed, removable or collapsible and whether any space is reserved for labels, tools or handling access.

Mixed-size cells can be reviewed, but every cell group should be marked on a layout with its clear dimensions, part orientation and quantity. Do not describe a mixed grid only by total cell count.

Step 4: Match the Grid to the Outer Container

Provide the internal length, width and usable height of the box, tote, pallet frame or rack. Mark anything that reduces usable space, including:

  • handles and backing plates;
  • corner fittings or reinforcement;
  • folded seams and joined panels;
  • lids, top frames or internal bases;

Step 7: Validate before Production

For irregular, delicate, high-value or tolerance-sensitive parts, approve a dimensioned drawing and check a representative part or agreed sample before the production order. Test loading, removal and movement under the intended handling conditions.

Define acceptance criteria such as: the packed part can be inserted and removed without forced contact, the protective wrap stays in place and movement remains within the project’s allowed limit. Record any changes before mass production.
