Quick answer: A PP hollow sheet RFQ should distinguish the supplied sheet size from the finished cut, folded or converted part size. State the unit, dimension order, flute direction, drawing revision, quantity and destination so the material and conversion requirements can be reviewed together.

“Sheet size” can describe several different things: the standard or supplied sheet, a cut blank before conversion, or the final component after trimming, creasing, folding and assembly. If an RFQ contains only one unlabeled set of dimensions, the supplier may not know which stage the numbers describe.

Separate the Three Dimension Stages

Use separate labels for the dimensions that apply to each production stage:

  1. Supplied sheet size: the length and width of the sheet delivered before further conversion.
  2. Cut blank size: the flat outline after trimming but before folding or assembly.
  3. Finished part size: the final length, width and height of the converted component in its intended form.

A flat layer pad may use only the first two stages. A folded sleeve, box panel or fitted insert may require all three. Mark dimensions on the drawing rather than relying on a filename or an email description.

Use One Dimension Order and One Unit

Write the dimension order explicitly, for example L × W × H in millimetres. Do not switch between millimetres and inches within the same drawing or spreadsheet. If a component is essentially flat, identify which edge is length and which is width.

For an irregular outline, include:

  • the maximum overall envelope;
  • the location and size of cut-outs, holes and slots;
  • the position of score or fold lines;
  • critical edge-to-feature dimensions;
  • the drawing revision and date.

Dimensions copied from a finished assembly can be misleading when they are used as a flat blank size. A marked drawing avoids that ambiguity.

Mark Flute Direction on the Drawing

PP hollow sheet has internal channels running in one direction. The required orientation should be marked with an arrow on the sheet or finished-part drawing when it matters to the design.

Do not assume that the longest dimension automatically follows the flute direction. Cutting layout, folds, slots and the way the component will be handled can affect the selected orientation. If the direction has not been decided, describe the application and identify the edges, folds or loads that require review.

Identify Every Conversion Feature

A quotation for a plain rectangular sheet differs from one for a finished component. List the operations required after sheet production, such as:

  • straight or shaped cutting;
  • creasing and folding;
  • slots, holes or handle openings;
  • welding, fastening or joined edges;
  • printing, labels or marked areas;
  • divider intersections or other assembly features.

Show the feature positions on the same revision-controlled drawing. A reference photo can help explain the intended form, but it should not replace dimensions.

Define Which Dimensions Are Critical

Not every dimension has the same function. Identify the dimensions that affect fit, assembly, machine clearance, label placement or contact with the packed product. State whether the values are targets, maximums, minimums or reference dimensions.

Do not assume one universal tolerance for every PP hollow sheet project. The review depends on the material format, part geometry, conversion process and intended fit. For close-fitting or assembly-critical parts, approve a drawing and representative sample before a production order.

Include the Application and Handling Route

Dimensions alone do not show how the part will be used. Add a short description of the application:

  • flat layer pad, divider, sleeve, liner or converted panel;
  • packed product and expected contact points;
  • manual, conveyor, trolley, pallet or other handling method;
  • single-use shipment or repeated internal handling;
  • required color, printing or identification;
  • quantity and destination country.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is sheet size the same as finished-part size?

Not always. A plain cut sheet may have the same dimensions at both stages, while a folded, slotted or assembled component can require a larger flat blank and a different finished size.

Should I provide a drawing for a rectangular sheet?

A simple dimensioned sketch is useful when flute direction, holes, printing or other features matter. For a plain rectangle, clearly labeled length, width, thickness, quantity and destination may be sufficient for an initial review.

What if the finished design is not complete?

Send the available envelope dimensions, application, packed-product details and handling requirements. Mark unknown values as “to be confirmed” instead of filling them with assumptions.

Do I need to mark flute direction?
